The influence of Islam on the historical, cultural, and social structures of Baltistan

Abstract
This study critically examines the influence of Islam on the historical, cultural, and social structures of Baltistan. Due to its unique historical and geographical context, Baltistan has undergone significant transformation, wherein Islamic teachings profoundly shaped local traditions, social norms, and moral values. Previous studies have primarily focused on the role of early missionaries and Sufi saints, such as Syed Ali Hamdani and his successors, while there remains a lack of comprehensive analysis regarding the broader socio-cultural and contemporary implications of Islamic influence on Baltistani society.Employing a qualitative research approach, this study analyzes historical records, literary works, and scholarly publications to trace the evolution of Baltistan’s cultural identity under Islamic impact. The research also considers the influence of contemporary global trends and international NGOs, which have affected youth perceptions and, in some cases, challenged the continuity of Islamic values and traditional cultural practices. Findings reveal that Islam has historically strengthened the moral, spiritual, and social fabric of Baltistan. However, modern global influences and cultural trends pose challenges to preserving traditional Islamic and cultural values among the younger generation. The study highlights the need for educational and community-based strategies to protect Baltistan’s Islamic identity while responding to modern socio-cultural changes. It provides a multidimensional view of the region and offers useful insights for scholars, policymakers, and educators on the relationship between religion, culture, and social transformation.
