Abstract
Gilgit-Baltistan, located in the northern region of Pakistan, is a land of remarkable geographical, historical, and cultural diversity. Surrounded by the mighty mountain ranges of the Karakoram, Himalayas, and Hindu Kush, the region is known for its scenic valleys and has gained global recognition, particularly among tourists. This article explores the linguistic and historical identity of Gilgit-Baltistan, tracing its ancient names such as Sargin and Gari Girit, and the reasons behind these names. Drawing on various historical accounts and scholarly references, the article establishes that Gilgit-Baltistan has no historical or ethnic ties with Kashmir. Instead, its population consists mainly of ancient tribes such as the Brosho and Balor, originating from regions like Badakhshan and Central Asia. The article also discusses the evolution of political systems in the region, from the early tribal settlements to the rule of Azar Jamshid in the 7th century. Overall, the study provides a comprehensive overview of Gilgit-Baltistan’s ancient civilization, linguistic development, and socio-political transitions, making it a valuable resource for future researchers.
